A live demonstration workshop
Guarapillos de Abuela
Tuesday, June 16, 2026
6:00 pm AST
In this 3-hour live demonstration workshop, you will learn 3 different medicinal tea preparations (guarapillos) in the Puerto Rican tradition. We will be working with fresh plants, and you will learn each step from harvest to cup. Each guarapillo will address a different health condition/system of the body, which will also be discussed.
Different plants require different forms of preparation for tea-making. The three preparations we will be covering are a decoction, a hot infusion, and tisana.
What you will learn:
how to harvest and prepare fresh plants for tea-making
the difference between a decoction, hot infusion, and tisana
measurements for tea-blending
how each preparation addresses a system of the body/symptoms
rituals to connect with the healing of the plants we are working with
learn the medicinal properties of the plantitas, as well as harvesting and medicine-making knowledge for tea blending
available at an additional cost : custom monographs for the plants we cover
In our tradition, tea was our medicine, and we used whole, fresh plants. It was preventative, long-term care! This offering is inspired by the multiple conversations I have had with my abuela, as well as my own practice of tea-making from the garden. My abuela grew up in the mountains of Puerto Rico, where her own mother’s garden was the family and community pharmacy. This tradition lives within each of us, especially when we reclaim this way of living in harmony with Earth and our peoples’ natural, alive, and vibrant medicine.
